Charter Schools in Utah

There are many reasons that play a factor on why parents choose to send their children to a charter school.  Some send them because their local public school has switched from a standard calendar schedule to a year round schedule due to overcrowding.  Some feel that their children benefit more from a smaller class size setting while others are very particular about the type of curriculum and subject focus that the school has chosen to use.

In any case, here are some of the most important things that you should be aware of.

Uniforms- Be aware that most charter schools have a Uniform Dress Code.  All are different but the standard one is certain colors of polo shirts with Khaki and Blue Uniform type pants.

Transportation- There is no public transportation to and from charter schools so you are responsible to arrange transportation to and from school. Some parents have arranged carpools only to find out that the parent they are carpooling with has decided not to continue and then they are without transportation for their children.

Governing Board- Since charter schools are still fairly new, they are continuing to come up with the best way to run their school.  This can be frustrating for some parents because this can result in changes of staff, curriculum, and sometimes even grade configurations.  Each charter school has a Governing Board that decides how to run the school.  They hire the Director/Principal and then that person works for them.

Smaller Class Sizes- Charter schools also have lots of positives about them.  They don't have as much red tape to work around so they can teach and run things more hassle free than your average public school.  The smaller school and class sizes are wonderful and most children thrive in this type of environment.

Volunteers- They love volunteers and most require that you volunteer at least 30 hours a year per family.

Lotteries- All charter schools have lotteries, so you will need to go to their website to see when they are running them.  Most of them are held Jan-March for the next school year.
